Hamstring Rehab - Recreational Footballer

Overview & Presentation

Rob presented with a Grade II proximal hamstring strain – his third on the same leg in 18 months. Assessment identified significant hip abductor weakness, reduced single-leg stability, and overstriding gait as primary contributing factors, none of which had been addressed previously.

Treatment Programme

01

Weeks 1–2 · Acute Management

Soft tissue treatment to reduce neural tension. Isometric hamstring loading commenced at day 5 to maintain tendon health.

02

Weeks 3–4 · Strength

Nordic hamstring curl progressions, hip abductor strengthening. Addressed the deficit driving recurrence.

03

Weeks 5–6 · Speed & Agility

Acceleration drills, change of direction patterns, progressive sprinting to 90% max speed. Gait retraining to reduce overstriding.

04

Week 7 · Return to Play

Full training completed with no symptoms. Criteria-based return-to-play sign-off given.

Outcome

Rob returned to competitive football at week 7 and completed his first full season without a hamstring injury.

"The difference this time was that Harry found out WHY I kept getting injured and fixed that - not just the injury itself."
